The Lake District
The Lake District is world renowned for its stunning landscapes. Views of glittering lakes against a backdrop of rugged mountains have inspired poets, writers and artists for centuries, and continue to attract thousands of visitors today who come in search of scenic inspiration and outdoor adventure.
Carlisle is a convenient base for accessing the Lake District. The main West Coast line has stations at Carlisle, Penrith and Oxenholme, the latter station connecting with the Lakes Line to Windermere. The M6 motorway provides access to the North Lakes (at Junction 40) and South Lakes (at Junctions 37 and 36), and bus services (nos. 554/555/556) link Carlisle to Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere and Kendal every day.
With such ease of access, it is possible to enjoy the special sights of the Lake District on a day trip from Carlisle before returning to sample the urban culture of the city - the best of both worlds.
